Richard represents the fourth generation of the Murphy family to lead the company. His expertise ranges from logistics and landscape architecture to real estate development.
A noted industry leader and popular speaker, Richard emphasizes excellence in logistics services combined with environmentally sustainable business practices. He has served as chairman of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. He is immediate past chair of the executive committee at the Center for Transportation Studies, a current member of the Carlson School of Management’s Supply Chain & Operations Advisory Board at the University of Minnesota and a past board member of the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA).
A former landscape architect by trade, Richard is a past president of the American Society of Landscape Architects – Minnesota Chapter. He also was an adjunct professor of landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota College of Design for more than 25 years. In fact, Richard’s background in landscape architecture, combined with his interest in sustainable business practices, have led to many of the company’s environmental initiatives, including native prairie and tree plantings, solar power generation and storm water management at many of the company’s facilities.
Richard has received numerous honors for his long-held commitment to education and service, including the William K. Smith Distinguished Service Award from the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies in May 2006; the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Minnesota’s College of Design in June 2005; and a Public Service Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects – Minnesota Chapter in 2006.
Richard holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Mass. and a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Minnesota.
Richard lives in Minneapolis and is a father of four children.
